 A Walking Tour of

Yellow Tavern,

North Anna and Cold Harbor

September 13-15, 2007- Richmond, Virginia

with Robert E. L. Krick

The Wilderness and Spotsylvania campaigns attract considerable attention as the inaugural events in the pivotal Overland Campaign of 1864. The subsequent engagements that carried Grant and Meade to, and across, the James River are somewhat less known. This tour will encompass all of the key sites associated with the movement of the armies from Spotsylvania to Richmond during the culminating phase of the Overland Campaign. Veteran Richmond battlefields tour leader, Robert E. L. Krick, will lead us to a wide array of locations across central Virginia where the campaign unfolded. Because of the poor record of public preservation efforts in the vicinity of Richmond, most of these battlefield sites are not officially preserved and are inaccessible to casual visitors. The great majority of the places we will visit are on private property.

After an overview on Thursday evening to set the stage for the actions in late May and early June, we will stop first on Friday at the Yellow Tavern battlefield, the site where the great Confederate cavalry chieftain, J. E. B. Stuart, fell fatally wounded. Our tour leader has written a detailed tactical narrative of the battle and is especially well equipped to talk about Yellow Tavern. From there we will bus to the North Anna battlefield and visit several of the key locations connected with that engagement. The tour will include several walks through the woods, a visit to the banks of the river, and a look at earthworks as well preserved and imposing as any which survive in Virginia.

On Saturday, our tour will follow Grant’s route from North Anna to Cold Harbor, with stops at Mangohick Church and Nelson’s Ferry on the Pamunkey River. As guests of the private owner we will visit Wyoming, a striking 18th century house that figured prominently in the events of May, 1864. Then, we will go to the Haw’s Shop battlefield - the second largest cavalry battlefield of the war in the eastern theater - and Totopotomoy Creek, Bethesda Church, and all of the surviving sites from the Battle of Cold Harbor. This includes the spot where Winfield Hancock’s Second Corps briefly breached the Confederate lines on June 3, and the ground where the Eighteenth Corps suffered enormous casualties in the course of Grant’s failed attack (both on private property).

Join us for this unique study of Civil War sites seldom seen. The tour will involve some walking but will not be arduous. Please call us at 800-298-1861 for questions or registration. We hope to see you in Richmond!
