This
unique tour will examine famous actions and not so famous ones, all through the
eyes of the Irish. These will include the defensive engagement on the morning
of Day One west of Gettysburg led by Colonel William Gamble of County Tyrone. We
will follow the pursuit of the Union 11th Corps on Day One with the unit that Confederate
General Richard Taylor called his “Irish Regiment” - the 6th Louisiana - and follow them again on the night of Day Two when
they charge up Cemetery Hill.
We
will view Barksdale’s Mississippians’ attack through the eyes of one of
the Irishmen in the 73rd New York (Frank Moran), and we’ll follow the green flags of the Irish
Brigade across the Wheatfield.
We
will stand with Captain John Dooley of the 1st Virginia who,
on Day Three, charged to within 30 yards of the Federal line before
being severely wounded, later to be captured, treated and held as a Union POW
until February, 1865. We will help repulse Pickett’s Charge with the brigade led
by General Thomas Smyth of County Cork. We’ll stand with Captain James Rorty, commander of Battery B, 1st NY Light Artillery who, during Pickett's Charge, died manning
the last of his functioning guns. We will help hold the stone wall with Colonel Dennis O’Kane’s 69th Pennsylvania as the Union line is broken.
During
our day, we’ll also explore a little known artillery action as we stand with Confederate
battery commander Captain James Reilly as he punishes the cavaliers
of Farnsworth’s doomed charge on Day Three.
Finally,
we will tell the story of the future President of the University of Notre Dame, Father William Corby, as he delivers benediction to the Irish Brigade
before they go into battle. We will also discuss the meaningful relationship
between President John F. Kennedy and the Gettysburg Battlefield.
During the day,
we’ll reflect on the motivations of the Irishmen who chose to make this war
their own. We’ll ponder the words of James Rorty, who in a letter to his
father, explained why he was going to risk his life by fighting in a war that
seemed of such little consequence to most Irish immigrants:
"….dear
father, let me reassure you of my firm conviction, that the separation of this Union into
North and South would not only be fatal to the progress of constitutional
freedom but would open impassable barriers in the way of future immigration. It
would close forever the wide portals through which the pilgrims of liberty from
every European clime have sought and found it. Why? Because at the North the
prejudices springing from the hateful and dominant spirit of Puritanism, and in
the South, the haughty exclusiveness of an Oligarchy would be equally
repulsive, intolerant and despotic. Our only guarantee is the Constitution, our
only safety is in the Union, one, and indivisible."
Driven by these and other motivations, Irishmen served
and shed their blood, fighting on both sides, in all of the major actions at Gettysburg. We
hope you’ll join us on our salute to the Irish at Gettysburg!
