On
tours in 2005 and 2006, we focused on the important roles that women played at Gettysburg. On October 13, we will concentrate mostly on
prominent men of Gettysburg - both famous and infamous. As we walk about the
historic downtown area, we will “meet”:
· James Gettys and his family who founded Gettysburg;
· Thaddeus Stevens, the “Great Commoner” – people either loved him or
absolutely loathed him;
· David McConoughy – was he a visionary when he organized the Gettysburg
Battlefield Memorial Association?
· David Wills – did he steal someone else’s idea for the National Cemetery?
· Henry Stahle, newspaper editor – was he a Southern sympathizer or
Union patriot?
· David Kendlehart, town council president – he escaped from Gettysburg as
the battle approached, leaving his family behind;
· John Burns, citizen patriot of Gettysburg – was he the only citizen of Gettysburg who
fought in the battle?
We
will also “meet” two more newspaper editors - Robert Goodloe Harper and J.
T. McIlhenny, and other citizens such as George Arnold, Moses McClean and David Buehler, postmaster of Gettysburg at the time of the battle. Buehler’s wife, Fanny,
left a vivid first-hand account of the town during the battle, a subject we
will also learn about during the tour.
We
will discuss these and other men (and some women) in depth and reflect upon
their lives, morals, political views and philosophies. We will visit homes,
churches, the Gettysburg Train Station, the Lincoln Cemetery (the final resting place of many of Gettysburg’s
black residents) and other sites central to the lives of these influential men
and other civilians of Gettysburg. In the afternoon, we will venture onto the
battlefield to discuss how some of these memorable characters put their
stamp on the fields of honor that we cherish today.
The
walking during our tour will proceed at an easy pace along flat ground with
plenty of pauses for lively conversation and discussion. The story lines will
be fascinating, and our guides, Joanne Lewis and Bob Baker, will have a
few surprises for us during the day.
We
hope you’ll join us on this unique
tour. You’ll surely gain a better understanding of the social, political, and
philosophical issues and attitudes of the civilians of Gettysburg, before, during,
and after the Civil War.
