We are happy to announce our Second Annual All-Star Tour of Gettysburg, designed for serious students of the battle, presented in the same format that was so well-received by those who participated in our 2006 program. Over a three day period, we will offer six in-depth tours, each of about 3 hours duration, each led by a top expert on the specific subject being covered. We will begin on Friday morning with a field examination of Cutler’s Brigade led by Rich Bellamy. This brigade was one of the few Union Brigades that saw fighting on all three days of the battle - to the west of Gettysburg on Day One, and on Culp’s Hill on Days Two and Three. Of the 58 Union Brigades at Gettysburg, Cutler’s Brigade ranked third in total losses (1,002) and 7th in percentage of loss (49.7).
After lunch, we will walk with Sue Boardman from Cemetery Hill to Devil’s Den, studying the battlefield monuments along the way. We will “hear the veterans speak” as we learn about the circumstances under which these monuments came to be commissioned, and what they represent.
On Saturday morning, led by Jim Clouse, we will focus on artillery at Gettysburg – tactics employed, strategic placements, types of guns and the men who fired them - North and South. Bring every question you ever had about artillery at Gettysburg! Not to slight the cavalry, on Saturday afternoon, led by Andie Custer, we will walk the ground of the South Cavalry Field and Farnsworth’s Charge.
More cavalry: on Sunday morning, Mike Vallone will lead us on a walking and driving tour of the Battle of Monterey which occurred on the night of July 4, 1863 as Judson Kilpatrick’s cavalry, led by George Armstrong Custer’s Michigan brigade, engaged Robert E. Lee’s retreating wagon trains in a vicious fight on the sides and summit of South Mountain.
We’ll enjoy Sunday lunch at the Fairfield Inn, which dates from 1757 and has hosted many famous Americans including Thaddeus Stevens, J. E. B. Stuart and Robert E. Lee. Then, we will travel back to Gettysburg where Gary Kross will lead us on a tour of the Attack and Defense of East Cemetery Hill.
Throughout our three days together, Gary will serve as lead historian and will provide the narrative for other aspects of the battle, including Little Round Top, that are not otherwise covered by Rich, Sue, Jim, Andie and Mike.
Given the quality of expertise that has been assembled for this program, we feel that we can fairly describe it as an All-Star Tour of Gettysburg. A fair amount of walking will be involved, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Throughout the tour, we’ll keep you supplied with water, soft drinks and snacks, and if at any time you wish to grab a breather, you’ll be free to hitch a ride in our support vehicle. We hope you’ll join us on this all-star tour of America’s greatest Civil War battle.
