Gettysburg:
The Second Day Like
You’ve Never Walked it Before!
October 19-20, 2012 - led by Gary Kross and another TBA
|
A series of decisions shaped the
tactical ebb and flow of the battle of Gettysburg, and on the second day’s
fighting, when Confederate assaults pushed Union defenders to the limit in
several sectors of the battlefield, these decisions were critical. The
combat on July 2 was the heaviest of the three-day battle, and several
commanders, most notably James Longstreet and Daniel E. Sickles, performed in
ways that later generated enormous controversy. As we examine the second
day’s fighting, we will address the famous debates over leadership at the army
and corps levels and assess the actions of a number of subordinate
officers. Our discussion will take place as we walk the ground where the
decisions were made and their execution carried out. Throughout the tour, we
will emphasize the points at which events might have taken a different turn.
We will begin on Friday by
considering Robert E. Lee's plans and George G. Meade's options. We will
then trace the route of Longstreet's First Corps to its position on the
southern end of the field and examine Daniel Sickles's movement off Cemetery
Ridge to occupy the Peach Orchard salient. We will walk crucial parts of the
field at the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den, Little Round Top, and
Cemetery Ridge, discussing the roles of such officers as John Bell Hood, John
C. Caldwell, Strong Vincent, Joseph B. Kershaw, Joshua L. Chamberlain, Evander
M. law, and William C. Oates.
On Saturday, we will begin with a
final look at action on the southern end of the field. Our focus will be
on the assaults mounted by William Barksdale and Ambrose Wright, each of which
gained considerable ground before ending in failure. We will then move to
the northern end of the battlefield to walk the ground at Benner's Hill, Cemetery
Hill, East Cemetery Hill, the Culp farm, Stevens's Knoll, Spangler's Spring,
Pardee Field, and Culp's Hill. Henry W. Slocum, Richard S. Ewell, Jubal
A. Early, Edward "Allegheny" Johnson, Joseph W. Latimer, George H.
Steuart, Alpheus S. Williams, and George S. Greene will be among the officers
we single out for special attention.

Wear comfortable shoes because a considerable
amount of walking is involved with this tour, but our support
vehicle will accompany the group at all times so you can take a
breather and hitch a ride at any point. We urge you to arrange your
lodging as soon as possible since Gettysburg is a busy place especially
in October. Please call us at 800-298-1861 if you have any questions. We
hope you’ll join us in Gettysburg for this robust, detailed battlefield
adventure
