November 4-7, 2009 – New Orleans, Louisiana

led by Dale K. Phillips

and William de Marigny Hyland

Text Box:

Once again, we invite you to join us in New Orleans. Our program leaders, both of whom have special connections to the Crescent City, have arranged an exciting adventure, certain to thrill even those who’ve visited the area many times before. During our three days and nights together, we’ll visit sites seldom seen, meet colorful local people, and delve deeply into the history, culture, architecture and cuisine of the most fascinating city in America. And we will journey south and north of the city into other areas of the Deep Delta to visit significant sites of the Civil War.

After an opening night reception at the Royal St. Charles Hotel, we will begin on Thursday with a combined driving and walking tour of the downtown and French Quarter areas. We will visit Gallier Hall (the Civil War period city hall), the United States Customs House, the Ursuline Convent and the Beauregard-Keyes House. After lunch at the Cajun Cabin on Bourbon Street, we will visit the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Perseverance Hall No. 4, and then the Confederate Memorial Hall. Many of you have already visited the latter, but the Hall’s situation, post-Katrina, is so dire that we regard it as a civic responsibility to visit there again and lend our support.

On Friday, we will travel by bus down river to Fort Jackson. Here we will discuss and view the site of the April 24, 1862 Union attack on this fort and Fort St. Philip and discuss the capture of New Orleans. Lunch will be at the magnificent Woodland Plantation (built in the 1830’s) located in West Pointe a la Hache. You may have seen this plantation gracing the label of Southern Comfort bottles. Following lunch we will take a quick tour of the plantation and then return to the east bank of the Mississippi River for a stop at the Chalmette Battlefield. We will get a first hand-look at the battlefield and St. Bernard Parish and will witness the damage inflicted upon them by Hurricane Katrina.

Saturday will be our most adventurous day. We will travel upriver to Baton Rouge, St. Francisville, and the Port Hudson Battlefield. In the morning we will take an overview tour of the Battle of Baton Rouge (August 5, 1862) and then visit Rosedown Plantation (circa 1834) in St. Francisville. We will  also stop at the Civil War period Grace Episcopal Church and the Locust Grove Plantation Cemetery, the burial site of the first Mrs. Jefferson Davis (Sarah Knox Taylor), daughter of General and President Zachary Taylor.

Saturday’s lunch will be at the Magnolia Café in St. Francisville. Then we’ll visit the Port Hudson Battlefield Visitor Center and see the audio-visual program and tour the exhibits. Then we will tour the battlefield including stops at Fort Desperate and The Devils Elbow.

Our program will be based at the Royal St. Charles Hotel, an upscale boutique hotel, located one block from Bourbon Street and the French Quarter and all that jazz ♫. We hope you’ll join us in November in New Orleans for a program that promises to be educational, friendly and fun!
